Overview

The Current State of Tariffs on the US Auto Sector. The auto sector has received a temporary reprieve from tariffs on vehicles imported from Mexico and Canada until early April. Tariffs on vehicles imported from countries outside North America are also expected to begin in early April.

Assessing the Potential Impact of US Import Tariffs on Automakers. Tariffs could negatively affect automaker operating profit margins by 230 basis points on average, though the impact would vary greatly by automaker based on manufacturing footprint.

Impact on Automakers. . In the short term, US import tariffs on vehicles could present challenges for companies, particularly those with exposure to Canadian and Mexican tariffs like GM, Honda, and Stellantis, and those with exposure to global tariffs such as Volvo Car, Hyundai Motor Group, and Mercedes-Benz.

Strategies for Managing Tariff Risks. Automakers have limited short-term options for addressing tariffs, while long-term strategies might require investments in new US manufacturing capacity.
